Kindergarten students will begin the program at Level 1. In order to get a baseline, administer the PAF Alphabet Test which focuses on the sounds of twenty-six letters.
Alphabet Test
For students who are beginning PAF after Kindergarten, The PAF Test of Single Word Reading is used to place students into instructional groups. The PAF Test of Single Word Reading contains words categorized from the simplest (consonant-vowel-consonant) to three-syllable root words, sequenced in the order they are taught in PAF. The test measures both decoding and word recognition separately.

Daily Assessment through teacher-monitored measures allows for qualitative and formative assessment, informal data collection of student learning (decoding and encoding, comprehension, fluency, and accuracy), and the ability to adapt instruction as needed through:
In order to collect data, teachers can use the following tools:
PAF Reading Program Daily Lesson
Regardless of the level in the PAF Reading Program Instructional Sequence, each reading lesson has five components:
The PAF Reading Program Instructional Sequence progresses from simple to complex concepts, and skills are practiced and reinforced at each level until they become automatic. Each lesson lasts between 45-60 minutes. Ideally, lessons should be delivered 5 days a week in Tier 1. In Tier 2 and Tier 3 settings, PAF Reading Program can be adjusted to fit the scheduling needs of the school.
All lessons are delivered through the direct instruction model, with students receiving immediate teacher feedback. Teachers carefully plan each lesson with the Teacher Handbook, Teacher Editions, and data from the PAF Reading Program curriculum-based assessments. Since all work is done under teacher supervision, there is opportunity for daily assessment of student learning and for teachers to adapt instruction as needed, and inform the next day’s instruction based on observations of student’s work during each lesson.
The PAF Test of Single Word Reading can also be used to monitor student progress by measuring growth in reading throughout the school year or from year-to-year. It is an alternative assessment tool for monitoring young students who cannot yet read the uncontrolled text on standardized tests.
Test of Single Word Reading for Progress Monitoring
Because students work under teacher supervision, doing spelling dictations and reading aloud, their progress is monitored on a daily basis. This crucial ongoing assessment helps determine the pace of instruction, as well as the instructional needs of students.
In addition to the daily assessments, Proficiency Tests are administered at the end of every unit of study. These curriculum-based assessments measure how well students have learned the specific material taught. Each Proficiency Test has a reading subtest that assesses decoding, word recognition, and comprehension, as well as a spelling subtest. The Proficiency Tests can be found, along with other supporting materials, under Materials By Book.
