The PAF Reading Program supports and aligns with the Model School Library Standards (MSLS) for California Public Schools Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve for grades K-2, which focuses on incorporating information literacy skills.  These skills allow students to access, evaluate, use, and integrate information and ideas found in print, media, and digital resources.

The PAF reading program’s specific grade-level applications support media literacy integration through the following connections via skill-building:

Kindergarten

Access Information:

• Identify meaning from simple symbols and pictures
• Use decodable books in response to teacher prompts from the Teacher Editions to gather information in a text
• Identify basic facts and ideas in what was read or heard
• Formulate appropriate questions that can be answered by available resources (Read Alouds)

Evaluate information:

• Relate a character’s actions in a decodable text to a personal experience or Text-to-self connection

Use information:

• Contribute to a group “concept web” using phonics-based keywords or pictures from decodable texts/stories.

Integrate information skills literacy skills into all areas:

• Utilize decodable readers as well as read-alouds to ensure students pursue an interest in reading (across varied text structures)
• Read or be read to from a variety of sources
• Share information and ideas in a clear and concise manner
•  Understand and respond to stories based on well-known characters, themes, plots, and settings
• Understand and respond to nonfiction.

Grade 1

Access Information

• Formulate comprehension questions based on teacher edition questioning
• Use questioning words (Who, what, where, when, how, why)

Evaluate information

• Share text-to-self connections using decodable texts and student’s prior knowledge
• Determine if these stories are created to inform or entertain the reader

Use information

• Organize and communicate information via sequencing decodable sentences or story cards to retell a narrative in the correct order

Integrate information skills literacy skills into all areas

• Utilize decodable readers as well as read-alouds to ensure students pursue an interest in reading (across varied text structures)
• Read and share information from decodable texts to build discussion protocols with their peers
• Read a good representation of grade-level-appropriate text

Grade 2

Access Information

• Identify a problem that needs information from decodable texts
• Utilize questions from decodable texts that guide students to use information from stories in order to answer questions
• Identify main ideas of a text through close readings of the decodable chapter books
• Use of nonfiction text structures
• Identify parts of a book, such as the table of contents, glossary, and index

Evaluate information

• Determine the relevance of information from decodable texts and passages in the skillbooks
• Review details from the stories to clarify answers to comprehension questions
• Draw meaning from diagrams and captions

Use information

• Use decodable stories to discuss problems and solutions, main ideas, and supporting details, etc.

Integrate information skills literacy skills into all areas

• Utilize decodable readers as well as read-alouds to ensure students pursue an interest in reading (across varied text structures)
• Read a variety of fiction and non-fiction stories from both the decodable readers and skillbooks
• Share information and develop discussion skills through daily routines
