Professional Development

Districts & Schools

The goal of PAF’s professional development is to ensure effective instruction by teachers and successful reading outcomes for students. To this end, comprehensive teacher training and ongoing support can be tailored to the needs of individual schools and districts and can be delivered on-site or through synchronous platforms.

Initial PAF Professional Development Course consists of two parts:

PAF Classes (14 hours) will cover:

  • An overview of research-based multisensory techniques for teaching reading, spelling, and handwriting
  • Components of a PAF lesson at various levels in the sequence
  • Planning a PAF lesson
  • Instructional practices for developing accurate and fluent reading and comprehension
  • Administering and analyzing PAF’s curriculum-based assessments.

Ongoing Support (6 hours) will include:

  • Coaching teachers based on shared videos of lessons
  • Feedback sessions
  • Lesson planning
  • Placement of students in instructional groups
  • Pacing of instruction
  • Instructional language
  • Assessments
  • Question and answer sessions

Completion of this 20-hour Initial PAF Professional Development Course is essential to the success of the program in your school or district. Thereafter, additional hours of ongoing support are available and strongly encouraged. Refer to the Ongoing Support Sessions in the chart below for more information.

Additional further professional development is also offered in specific aspects of the PAF curriculum, giving teachers the opportunity to dive deeper into the fundamentals of multisensory instruction. These topics include reading comprehension, syllabication, spelling, and assessments. Refer to the Follow Up Training Sessions in the chart below for more information.

Courses are taught and support is given by Master Teachers with years of experience teaching PAF in public and independent schools.

Teachers

For individual teachers seeking professional development in the PAF Reading Program, we offer two options. First, attend one of the PAF courses offered at the Windward Institute. Below is detailed information about upcoming events. Alternatively, contact us at info@pafprogram.com to inquire about PAF courses offered throughout the school year.

Multisensory Reading Instruction, PAF Part I

This four-session course focuses on multisensory techniques for teaching reading, spelling, and handwriting in the primary grades using the PAF Reading Program. PAF incorporates the theory and practices of Orton-Gillingham instruction into an early reading program intended to be used with groups of children at-risk for reading difficulties. PAF can also be used remedially for struggling readers, for tutoring, or as an effective beginning reading program for all children.

Topics will include instructional practices supported by the latest research on developing accurate decoding and fluent reading, comprehension, lesson planning, and curriculum-based assessments.

For teachers of grades K-5 and special education settings.

This course is offered for two graduate credits. There are additional hours, assignments, and fees.

Dates:  January 20, 27, February 2, and 9, 2023.

Topics include long vowels, homonyms, morphemes, multisyllable words, spelling rules, and transitioning from controlled readers into grade level text. This four-session course is for teachers who have taken Multisensory Reading Instruction PAF Part I.
