The Merrill readers are a series of eight books coordinated with the PAF program.
Children practice reading in their Stepping Up books before reading stories in the Merrill readers. This preparation makes the reading of the words easier for children, so they can focus their attention on the meaning of the stories. The Merrill readers are an excellent accompaniment to the PAF program because they:
Contain decodable text which research has shown is important for beginning readers
Are well paced unlike other phonetic programs that introduce sounds too quickly
Contain fiction and non-fiction that lends itself to teaching a variety of comprehension skills
Contain interesting stories that children can read successfully
